Anitta Hipper: The EU stands with Elene Khoshtaria and all unjustly detained political prisoners in Georgia - we call for their immediate release

First of all, the European Union stands with Elene and all unjustly detained political prisoners, journalists and civil society representatives in Georgia, Anitta Hipper, Lead European spokeswoman for Foreign Affairs and Security, said in response to a question regarding the detention of Elene Khoshtaria, one of the leaders of the Coalition for Change.

“Our full solidarity goes with them and we call for their immediate release. For our side, we have taken actions and continue to explore ways and options throughout when it comes to putting further pressure on the Georgian authorities in view of the huge democratic backsliding that we have seen, and this has started already with the High Representative through the FACs and also the last meeting of Foreign Ministers in July, also the discussions that we have been seen inlcuded also further options in terms of what we can foresee. Sanctions, suspension of the visa-free regime and other options,” the European Commission spokesperson said.

She noted that the EU has already reduced political contacts, stopped providing financial assistance to the Georgian authorities and increased support to civil society.
