Prosecutor's Office launches criminal proceedings against Giorgi Bachiashvili’s parents

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has initiated criminal proceedings against the parents of convicted Giorgi Bachiashvili on charges of assisting in the legalization of illegal income.

According to the information released by the Prosecutor's Office, within the framework of the ongoing investigation, it was established that Giorgi Bachiashvili also involved his parents in the "necessary actions" to legalize part of the assets obtained through criminal means.

In particular, according to the Prosecutor's Office, Giorgi Bachiashvili legalized illegal income in the amount of 2,944,957 USD and 1,097,187 GEL in 2017-2023 with the help of his parents.

Both individuals were indicted, which carries a sentence of 9 to 12 years in prison.

“As is known to the public, in 2015-2017, Giorgi Bachiashvili, who was the legal owner and administrator of the cryptocurrency generated as a result of investment in mining and owned by Bidzina Ivanishvili, did not transfer the corresponding amount of virtual assets to the investor and illegally misappropriated 8,986.8675 bitcoins belonging to Bidzina Ivanishvili, after which he legalized the appropriated assets.

Within the framework of the investigation, it was established that Giorgi Bachiashvili also involved his own parents in the actions necessary to legalize part of the assets obtained through criminal means”, reads the information.

“Giorgi Bachiashvili, with the assistance of his parents, legalized illegal income in the amount of 2,944,957 USD and 1,097,187 GEL from assets obtained through criminal means in 2017-2023.

A decree on charges was issued against both individuals under Article 25 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, for the crime provided for in Article 194, Part 3, Subparagraph “C”, which provides for imprisonment for a term of 9 to 12 years as the form and measure of punishment.

The Prosecutor’s Office shall apply to the court within the time limit established by law with a request to impose a preventive measure,” reads the information released by the Prosecutor’s Office.
