Shalva Papuashvili: If I understood correctly, Kallas and Kos are not apologizing for their spokesperson’s support of a rally calling for the overthrow of the government – as for their election assessment, I once again urge them to refrain from spreading false narratives

"Mrs. Kallas and Mrs. Kos are not apologizing for their spokesperson’s support of a rally calling for the overthrow of the government – yet this is precisely what Georgian society expects from the European Union today," – Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili wrote on social media, responding to the joint statement by European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.

Papuashvili called on EU representatives to refrain from spreading false narratives detached from facts.

"If I understood correctly, Mrs. Kallas and Mrs. Kos are not apologizing for their spokesperson’s support of a rally calling for the overthrow of the government, which resulted in 25 police officers being injured during the attack on the Presidential Palace. Yet, this is precisely what Georgian society expects from the European Union today.

As for their assessment of the Georgian elections, I once again call on all EU representatives to refrain from spreading false narratives detached from facts, which only strengthens the desire of radical forces to undermine democracy, the rule of law, and respect for human rights," – Papuashvili wrote.

For context, European Commission Vice-President Kaja Kallas and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos issued a joint statement regarding the local self-government elections held in Georgia.

The statement said that "the local self-government elections in Georgia this Saturday took place in an environment of large-scale suppression of dissent."

Kallas and Kos also called for calm and restraint in the post-election period, stressing the need for constructive and inclusive dialogue with the participation of all political actors and civil society representatives, and urged all sides to refrain from violence.
