Salome Zurabishvili: A unified and clear voice must be heard from Georgia against the banning of opposition parties: this is unacceptable - the persecution of opponents not only destroys multiparty democracy, it fractures society and destroys the state

"I condemn 'Georgian Dream's' decision to ban the main opposition parties, which aims to transform Georgia into a Russian-style authoritarian regime," writes Georgia's fifth President, Salome Zurabishvili, on social media.

According to her, "the regime is systematically restricting everything on a daily basis that hinders the establishment and consolidation of full authoritarianism."

"Today, a unified and clear voice must be heard from Georgia against the banning of opposition parties: this is unacceptable!

Such persecution of opponents not only destroys multiparty democracy - it fractures society and destroys the state.

Solidarity with all opposition forces whose constitutional rights to free expression and participation in political activity are being restricted," Zurabishvili writes on Facebook.

For reference, "Georgian Dream" is appealing to the Constitutional Court to ban three parties. According to Papuashvili, the constitutional lawsuit prepared by the ruling party requests the declaration as unconstitutional and banning of the following parties: "National Movement," "Coalition for Change," and "Strong Georgia - Lelo."
