Shalva Papuashvili - The way for Brussels to restore relations with the Georgian people is through respect for European values - if they want to return to European values, the first step is to recognize and respect democracy

When we talk about the complicated relationship between Georgia and the European Union, we should not forget the primary source of this situation, - writes the Speaker of the Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.

As the Speaker of the Parliament notes, Brussels today has lost sight of our common European values, the main one of which is respect for democracy.

“When we talk about the complicated relationship between Georgia and the European Union, we should not forget the primary source of this situation. Today, Brussels has lost sight of our common European values, the main one of which is respect for democracy.

It is impossible to respect democracy - that is, the rule of the people - and, at the same time, interfere in the choices of other peoples. The way and intensity with which Brussels and some of its ambassadors interfered in the 2024 elections is a violation of both the UN Charter and the Vienna Convention, that is, the rules-based international order.

It is impossible to respect democracy and ignore the law and justice. Brussels has been defeated more than enough by the Georgian judiciary to be so arrogantly criticizing its decisions today. Let us remind you that Brussels was defeated on the Saakashvili case, on the Melia case, on the Gvaramia case, on absolutely all the cases that some unscrupulous bureaucrats in Brussels considered a political verdict. Strasbourg said: Brussels was lying, and Georgian justice was absolutely right.

Finally, it is impossible to respect democracy and not distance yourself from politically motivated crimes. The EU ambassador’s careful non-response to the question of condemning the violence of October 4 shows the value deadlock that Brussels has brought itself into. Modern Europe not only does not distance itself from violence, but also openly stands on the side of the perpetrators.

The path is clear, the solution is obvious. The path for Brussels to restore relations with the Georgian people is through respect for European values. If Brussels wants to return to European values, the first step is to recognize and respect democracy,” Papuashvili writes.
