Fines for violations of  some traffic rule to be increased - including a 100 GEL sanction for speeding, and a 50 GEL fine for not wearing a seat belt or using a mobile phone

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has developed a package of legislative amendments, the main goal of which is to ensure maximum compliance with traffic rules and prevent traffic accidents.

According to the Ministry, in recent years, considering significantly increased number of vehicles and increasing mobility, road safety remains a challenge, and despite the progress made, hundreds of people die or suffer serious health injuries in Georgia each year as a result of traffic accidents.

“Therefore, traffic accidents and the related mortality rate oblige the state to take effective steps to tighten road safety rules.

The analysis of the causes of traffic accidents confirms that in order to ensure maximum public safety, it is necessary to significantly review and tighten the currently existing sanctions. Therefore, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has prepared a package of legislative amendments, according to which:

The fine for violating the rules of maneuvering a vehicle on the road will increase to 100 GEL. At the same time, the number of points assigned to the driver's license for this offense will be reduced by 20 points;

The sanction for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 km/h, but not more than 40 km/h, will increase from 50 to 100 GEL;

The sanction for failure to use a seat belt by the driver or passenger while driving a vehicle will increase to 50 GEL, at the same time, the number of points assigned to the driver's license for this violation will be reduced by 10 points;

The sanction for using a mobile phone by the driver while driving a vehicle will increase to 50 GEL;

Similar to Tbilisi, the fine for violating the rules of parking will be increased to 50 GEL in the municipalities of Kutaisi, Batumi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Gori, Telavi, Poti, Zugdidi and the resorts of Georgia.

Additional responsibility is established for driving in the opposite direction of traffic of any vehicle other than a minibus on the “BUS LANE”, which will result in a fine of 200 GEL.

Therefore, a new violation is defined as standing and parking a vehicle on the sidewalk or at a pedestrian crossing, which will result in a fine of 100 GEL. At the same time, in case of committing this violation, if the conditions specified by law are met, the vehicle will be subject to being transferred to a special parking lot.

The aforementioned package of legislative amendments has already been submitted to the Parliament of Georgia”, reads the information.
