Shalva Papuashvili: Brussels is used to giving instructions and is not used to criticism – the process of its Sovietization, unfortunately, is progressing very successfully

Brussels is accustomed to issuing instructions and is unaccustomed to criticism, which once again shows how far it has drifted from core European values, stated the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili.

According to Papuashvili, the communication coming from Brussels is full of directives – only instructions, with zero reflection, zero willingness to hear criticism, and zero opportunity for others to provide explanations.

“In addition to this, the comments we heard these days revealed another trend: the arrogance of speaking on behalf of other nations. We have already been exposed to this for some time – various ministers from different countries have somehow gotten used to speaking on behalf of the Georgian people. Today we saw a statement by the French Foreign Minister. A government in France with 17% support speaks on behalf of a government in Georgia with 54% support, telling us what Georgians want. How would she know? Has she even ever been to Georgia? Honestly, it is truly arrogant to speak on behalf of other nations.”

Papuashvili said that this is a typical Soviet phenomenon, when Soviet Moscow used to speak on behalf of other peoples and believed it knew what they wanted – rather than the people themselves who were under the Soviet Union’s subordination.

“We are directly witnessing the Sovietization of Brussels, in which representatives of Eastern Europe are contributing. We see that EU foreign policy has been handed over to Kaja Kallas, who was born and raised in a Soviet Estonian nomenklatura family, and European affairs have been handed over to Ms. Kos, a successful athlete from communist Yugoslavia, who faces allegations of collaborating with Yugoslavia’s secret services — allegations she has not been able to convincingly refute. The Sovietization of Brussels is unfortunately progressing very successfully, and Brussels is drifting away from core European values.”

Papuashvili stated on the program “Imedi LIVE” that under the leadership of today’s Brussels it is difficult to imagine goodwill toward the Georgian people for a very simple reason: “today’s Brussels does not want a Georgia that is like us.”

“We know what kind of Georgia they want. They want a country standing on one foot. They warmly embrace a person not because of who he is, but because he said that a nation must raise its dignity in order to join some union or organization. They demand it from us for no reason – just to entertain themselves. ‘Come, stand on one foot, and we’ll watch and have fun.’ Therefore, under today’s Brussels, it is of course difficult to expect anything positive from them.”

According to Papuashvili, the solution is the same process that happened in the United States, where the public eventually “woke up” and reversed what he described as a series of inadequate policies toward Georgia.

“We are seeing the same awakening in the European Union and its member countries. One after another, nations are electing patriotic forces – and that is the solution. Brussels must change – the policies and approaches in Brussels must be changed. For them, the Georgian people and their choice mean nothing, zero. Only what a person standing on one foot says is law for them – not the people who choose us.”
