Shalva Papuashvili: For the first time, we heard from European leaders that any peace plan must have the consent of both Ukraine and Europe — Europe has been added to Ukraine as an actor in the agreement, and this is concerning

"Yesterday, for the first time, we heard from European leaders that any peace plan must have the consent of both Ukraine and Europe — and here, it seems, the European Union was meant. Until now, the narrative was that any peace agreement must be approved by Ukraine, but now, it appears, Europe has been added as an actor participating in the agreement. This is concerning," said Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili while speaking to journalists about the “peace agreement”.

As Papuashvili noted, all of this once again raises doubts — the same doubts being discussed within the European Union — that some EU member states have their own interests in this war.

"We even saw this from President Zelensky’s reaction to this plan — that today Ukraine, the Ukrainian government, is forced to make two difficult choices, which in reality is not even a choice. The fact is that Ukraine's government is in a condition where it can neither continue the war nor end the war. Whatever it chooses is difficult for the Ukrainian people. And this is the path that our opposition and NGOs — under instructions from outside — were proposing to us, pushing us toward. Let me remind you, they were holding rallies in front of Parliament in March 2022 demanding that we escalate against the country which had started the biggest war since World War II. They wanted Georgia to be dragged into the same situation. Considering the scale of our country, it wouldn’t have taken long — that is exactly the point they would have taken us to. The Georgian public clearly understands what we were facing and toward what we were being pushed — those forces that wanted to drag Georgia into this war were acting against our national interests.

Yesterday, for the first time, we heard from European leaders that any peace plan must have the consent of both Ukraine and Europe — and here, it seems, the European Union was meant. Until now, the narrative was that any peace agreement must be approved by Ukraine, but now, it appears, Europe has been added as an actor participating in the agreement. This is concerning. It once again raises the same doubts being discussed within the European Union — that some EU member states have their own interests in this war. That is why the current U.S. Secretary of State called this war a proxy war — a war waged by the hand of a puppet. It seems that these knots are being untied and it is becoming clear that there is a direct interest in this war within certain political groups in Europe," Papuashvili stated.

According to Papuashvili, if this is the European Union’s war, “why is the blood of EU citizens not being shed and why is this war being carried on the shoulders of Ukrainians?”

"If this is the European Union’s war, if their consent is required for a peace agreement, then why are they not fighting? Why is the blood of EU citizens not being shed? Why is this war being carried on the shoulders of Ukrainians, and why is this war being fought thanks to the heroism of Ukrainians? All of this ultimately serves as a great wake-up call for everyone — to see the reality of how international politics works. No one will trouble themselves for the interests of our nation," Papuashvili said.
