The First Vice-Speaker of Parliament, Gia Volski, said this to journalists, commenting on the situation regarding protests and statements made by parliamentary figures.
According to Volski, on November 28, 2024, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze “did not say a single word about us halting anything,” and the earlier statement was made much earlier by the EU Ambassador, Paweł Herczyński.
Volski noted that public protest certainly exists, but it is an organized protest directed against Georgia as a country, not against the Georgian Dream party.
"It has been a year since Kobakhidze refused to continue the Eurointegration process," which is completely absurd, Volski said. "The fact is that since then, a certain group of young people, who were easily misled, have come of age. They were shown Kobakhidze’s statement. In principle, the discussion was about the fact that we would no longer contact them to start the negotiation process because we expected the same blackmail as occurred during the granting of candidate status. The attempt was real. They said they would not grant candidate status, foreign ministers came, and the people were urged to rise up. Therefore, if Kobakhidze said we would not contact you, that does not mean we are not working in this direction. On the contrary, he said that by 2028 we will be ready, though tomorrow we can start negotiations on several topics. This is reality.
The second bitter reality is that, precisely because we did not enter a war, did not impose economic sanctions on Russia, did not destroy our economy, passed the transparency law, and banned LGBT propaganda - much earlier than Kobakhidze would have made a statement - the EU Ambassador issued the statement. So, a year has passed since June, damaging the process in this way. If anyone should hold a protest, if a protest should be held somewhere, it should be at the EU Embassy demanding to know why it was halted. We can debate other topics, confront each other on other topics, but let us not kill each other just because the government is not entering a war, economically or militarily. For this reason, we must not confront each other. Society has been divided. This is terrible. This is sabotage against our country, when young people are set against other young people."
