“Peaceful protests outside will continue as long as there is this group of lawyers and legal professionals who help and serve people completely selflessly, even though we know how unfair today’s judiciary can be. I think this is statehood — to continue and defend with the legal tools at your disposal,” said the fifth President, Salome Zurabishvili, speaking about the group of lawyers formed to provide free legal assistance to those detained during the December 2024 protests.
At this moment, Salome Zurabishvili is meeting with some of the lawyers in this group as well as with the family members of those detained during the protests.
According to Zurabishvili, the group, established last year, has done everything possible to fulfill its obligations.
“This peaceful protest stands outside and will continue as long as there exists this group of lawyers and legal professionals who help and serve people completely selflessly, despite knowing how unfair today’s judiciary is. I think this is statehood — to continue and defend with the legal opportunities you have. Because we cannot assume that the judiciary no longer exists, no matter what. You know all its limitations, but I always say that as long as people exist, there can always be one judge who does not lose their humanity. It is important for the state that lawyers continue practicing law and fulfilling their professional duties; otherwise, we will become a passive society. I want to thank everyone. This group was established one year ago under the leadership of Eka Beselia, and indeed, over the past year, they have done everything possible to fulfill their obligations, completely selflessly, and I want to emphasize this. Therefore, on behalf of us, the society, I want to express gratitude. I want them to know that we are proud that in a society where others are indulging in millions, there are such people. It is much better to enjoy your society with love, and this you have achieved,” Salome Zurabishvili stated.
