The internal structures of the European Union cannot eliminate corruption in European structures, - this is how the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, assessed the detention of the rector of the College of Europe, Federica Mogherini, in Belgium.
As Papuashvili told journalists, the secret financing of non-governmental organizations in Georgia is also fertile ground for corruption.
"There is nothing surprising here. This is not the first scandal involving the European Commission and other EU structures. It seems that corruption is a common occurrence. We have seen cases against the Commissioner for Justice and members of the European Parliament before. So, the Belgian police have a lot to do in this regard. We see that the internal structures of the European Union cannot ensure that there is no corruption in European structures. We also have doubts about many issues and have repeatedly said that the secret financing of NGOs in Georgia is also a fertile ground for direct corruption. There is a suspicion that we are dealing with corruption here, when various organizations are secretly financed in Georgia. With the desire for secrecy, it seems that there may also be an attempt to erase traces of corruption and not reveal to the public the evidence that shows that, for example, in Georgia, funds are distributed with bias," Papuashvili said.
For information, police in Belgium have arrested Federica Mogherini, the rector of the College of Europe. According to the media, police have arrested the former High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and current rector of the College of Europe, Federica Mogherini, as part of an investigation ongoing into corruption.
