“Irakli Kobakhidze will have to take responsibility, and I will tell him something very unfortunate: I believe he will share Gakharia’s fate,” - said Ana Dolidze, Chair of the For the People party, on PalitraNews’ program "Day’s Newsroom", while assessing the BBC’s journalistic investigation.
When asked why she thinks Kobakhidze is the one who will have to take responsibility for this issue, Dolidze replied: “Because we have one precedent, and that precedent is now resting in Germany.”
“This precedent is related to the ‘Gavrilov Night,’ which first served as a stepping stone for his promotion, and later as an opportunity to use him as a scapegoat. I mean the ‘Bremen Town Musician,’ the leader of the Georgian Zuganov party, because what his party is doing is nothing but serving as the lightning rod of a dictator. Legally speaking, the main question will be: who gave the order to use this weapon? Who knew and did nothing to stop it?! It’s not only Kobakhidze; there is an entire chain of individuals,” - Dolidze said.
The politician is convinced that Georgian Dream will not file a lawsuit against the BBC, because doing so would “open Pandora’s box” about what they did in Georgia. According to her, the BBC’s film shows only the tip of the iceberg.
“There will be no lawsuit against the BBC. Why? Because no one in London is going to bow down to Murusidze and Chinchaladze. Here they dare to try to silence us because they completely control the judicial system. But excuse me - in London, they control no one, and they would never risk opening Pandora’s box regarding what they did in Georgia. They will not do it themselves!
I believe what is shown in the BBC’s film is just the top of the iceberg. I am sure that such a thoroughly objective media outlet prepared much more extensively, and what we see is only the tip of the evidence iceberg. That’s why Georgian Dream will not dare to sue,” - Dolidze stated.
According to her, statements about “substance analysis” are merely attempts to stall for time.
“It is an absolute lie, and this is just an attempt to stretch time - to somehow drag this out until the end of the week, hoping the public outrage will subside. What Gomelauri already admitted - that yes, we really did have it - he said because he didn’t know, and still doesn’t know, that possession itself is a problem. But worse than possession is use. Thirteen years have passed; ministers have the obligation to check what they possess. If they have chemical weapons, they must disclose them, notify The Hague, destroy them - there is a whole list of obligations. But here is the second issue: we are not talking about possession discovered in some warehouse. We have evidence of use. Hundreds of people’s health is damaged, and we still don’t know the long-term consequences. The studies clearly show the weapon was used. This is a grave crime, far worse than mere possession, and we need answers on both fronts,” - Dolidze said.
The politician claims she has information that Georgian Dream will try to overshadow this issue by launching procedures to ban opposition parties.
“I have information that calls were made to the Constitutional Court to urgently schedule sessions regarding party dissolution, to overshadow this topic. They have spent the entire week trying one way or another to cover it up. Nothing worked because they delivered a very serious slap to the Georgian people. Now they will try again - to deceive.
I want to address the parties: if they indeed stage this show, let us all use this opportunity to talk about the poisoning and the use of chemical weapons. They want to put on a spectacle where everyone starts talking about their own party and forgets the main, extremely serious crime. If they give us this platform - at the Constitutional Court - let us all go and talk about our parties in the context that they are being abolished so this government can commit whatever violence it wants in this country. Why are parties and online media being attacked? Why is all independent funding under attack? Because they want to be left alone to do whatever they want to the Georgian people,” - Dolidze said.
She added that if the government were motivated by establishing the truth, the investigation would be handled by the Prosecutor’s Office - not the State Security Service (SUS).
“To establish the truth, the SUS has nothing to do with these cases. This should be a normal Prosecutor’s Office investigation. But I think the SUS is handling it so that everything is collected, stored, and ready to use against the people who actually committed these acts - at a moment when it becomes politically useful,” - Dolidze noted.
Dolidze said she had submitted information to The Hague back in December of last year, but emphasized that, as a Georgian, she would prefer justice to be achievable inside Georgia.
“I submitted all the publicly available information that, as an expert in international law, seemed to amount to a crime against humanity.
For me, as a Georgian, the best and most correct thing would be not to seek justice abroad. Justice and an end to impunity should be possible here. This is what I have always fought for - but this requires a change of government,” - Dolidze concluded.
