The parliamentary faction “For Georgia” submitted a draft resolution to Parliament requesting the establishment of an investigative commission in connection with the BBC report.
According to MP Giorgi Sharashidze, “we are dealing with a crime that was partially acknowledged by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze when he said that a certain chemical substance had been mixed into the water.”
Sharashidze stated that the temporary parliamentary investigative commission should question, among others, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and former Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri.
“We do not know exactly which chemical substance is being discussed, but the fact that another substance was mixed into the water is a crime. This is clear. Any MP from the ‘Georgian Dream’ who refuses to support our initiative to create the commission will share responsibility for a possible crime that will most likely, in due time, be confirmed - because a legally prohibited chemical substance was used. I warn every MP from ‘Georgian Dream’: by blocking this initiative, you will share responsibility for the crime committed by specific officials,”Sharashidze said.
Responding to journalists’ questions, the MP added that comparing last year’s protests with the events of June 20 (2019) is absolutely unacceptable.
“It has been confirmed that the order to use rubber bullets was not issued by Gakharia. Comparing June 20 with the peaceful demonstrations of 2024 is absolutely unacceptable.June 20 was an assault on a state institution, whereas 2024 saw peaceful demonstrations. Comparing these two events is categorically unacceptable,” he stated.
