The Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, has responded to the arrest of the former head of the State Security Service, Grigol Liluashvili, stating that the fact “demonstrates the strength and determination of the team to ensure that there are no vicious manifestations within the team.”
According to him, this fact confirms that when the government talks about fighting corruption, it actually means it.
“This shows the strength of the team, that it has the ability to reveal any misconduct on the part of the team members. This is precisely the result of the correct institutional arrangement. This once again confirms that when we talk about the fight against corruption, we mean it.
The very fact that the Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Security Service reveal alleged corruption cases shows that when the government talks about the fight against corruption, it means it, and vice versa, this shows the strength of the team itself and its determination to ensure that there are no vicious manifestations within the team,” Papuashvili said.
For information, Grigol Liluashvili, the former head of the State Security Service, who came to the Prosecutor's Office for questioning, has been detained. He is charged under Article 338, Part 2, Subparagraph “c” and Part 3, Subparagraph “e” of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which involves taking a bribe in a particularly large amount by a group by prior agreement and provides for a sentence of 11 to 15 years of imprisonment.
