When speaking about Brussels, it is difficult to look for justice, logic, or rationality, said Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia. According to him, Brussels has long since moved beyond the framework of reasonable decision-making, which is evident both in its approach toward Georgia and Ukraine.
“Justice has long been lost in the decisions they make,” Papuashvili stated.
He emphasized that Brussels’ leadership must change, as it has drifted away from the interests of European peoples and is acting according to a different political agenda and political orders.
“We will not trade sovereignty for any form of political blackmail. The Georgian people have become convinced that there is no justice or objective criteria behind the decisions made by Brussels, only harmful political goals. This is the unfortunate result to which the reputation of the EU and Brussels has been brought in the eyes of the Georgian people due to incompetent diplomacy and Brussels bureaucracy.
The introduction of a visa regime for holders of diplomatic passports violated the 2010 agreement between Georgia and the European Union, turning the EU itself into a violator of international law. In an attempt to change power in Georgia, they went so far as to violate international law-something they often accuse others of doing,” Papuashvili said.
According to him, the current Brussels bureaucracy has led the EU toward a civilizational abyss.
“We will never find common ground with such a bureaucracy. This bureaucracy has brought the European Union to the edge of a civilizational abyss-so what common language can we find with it? If we had listened to Brussels, today we would be clearing rubble. Had we chosen escalation, imposed sanctions on Russia as demanded by the European Commission, closed our airspace, and entered a spiral of confrontation with Russia, we would not have avoided military conflict and the destruction of the country.
The European Union was created as a peace project, yet today it speaks openly about war, prepares for war, and adopts a wartime mindset. Those who prepare for war will always end up with war-this is the logic of escalation,” Papuashvili stated.
He concluded that common ground cannot be found with such a Brussels, and therefore the key path forward is a change in Brussels’ leadership.
“We see countries where patriotic forces-true bearers of genuine European values-are coming to power. As soon as this trend reaches the Brussels bureaucracy and it begins to listen to European peoples, it will immediately become possible to finally normalize our relations,” Papuashvili said.
