Armaz Akhvelidiani on opposition renewal, trust, and Georgia’s political crisis

Opposition politician Armaz Akhvelidiani stated in an interview on PalitraNews, during the show Day’s Newsroom, that without substantial renewal of the opposition, it is impossible to change the political agenda in Georgia. He emphasized the need for a completely new political space, composed of untainted people who enjoy public trust and can participate in the complete dismantling of the current regime with a clear plan.

“I agree with Zurab Japaridze that people should be brought out into the streets. But then what happens? If he has a plan, I would be happy to meet and discuss it,” Akhvelidiani said.

He explained that the opposition’s current problem is the lack of public trust, which it has essentially lost and can no longer restore. In contrast, he argued, the ruling party, Georgian Dream, lacks decency and relies on fear, blackmail, bribery, and Russian propaganda to maintain its support.

Akhvelidiani noted that the opposition had a unique chance during the pre-election period of 2024 to renew itself but largely failed to do so. He believes that without new leadership and credible politicians, the opposition cannot seize opportunities or create an effective political agenda.

“We need a new team of politicians, with decent people. Bidzina Ivanishvili fears decent men. Disorder is darkness; decency is light,” he said.

Regarding the case of former Defense Minister Bacho Akhalaia, Akhvelidiani expressed skepticism about whether truth and justice could be achieved under the current prosecution and judicial system. He suggested that, given the regime’s control, investigating the case transparently is virtually impossible.

Finally, Akhvelidiani assessed Georgia’s 2025 political situation, arguing that the current ruling regime of Ivanishvili and Kobakhidze has caused the country to miss its chance to become a modern, successful, strong, law-based European-type state. He described the regime as essentially modeled on Russian authoritarian methods, maintaining the appearance of legality while implementing unfair and unconstitutional practices.

Ivanishvili implemented Kremlin-style governance methods, and now Kobakhidze has diversified them. They believe they are lawful, but these laws are unjust and inconsistent with the constitution and international norms,” Akhvelidiani stated.
