Citizens Sandro Megrelishvili and Dimitri Jamburia were sentenced to four days each of administrative detention for standing on a sidewalk.
The decision was made by Judge Davit Makaradze.
According to Sandro Megrelishvili’s defense lawyer, Irakli Abesadze, the ruling stems from “Papuasvhili’s Parliament’s absurd law, when they try to deal with people through force.”
Abesadze said the case will definitely be appealed to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.
As Abesadze stated, there is no evidence whatsoever, other than the fact that the person was peacefully standing on the sidewalk.
“The absurd Kobakhidze–Papuasvhili law was given an absolutely comical interpretation by Judge Makaradze of the Murusidze–Chinchaladze clan — meaning that if you are standing on a sidewalk, drinking beer, eating sunflower seeds, gossiping about a neighbor’s life, or talking about Ivanishvili’s zebras or even football, you are not breaking the law. But if you are standing on a sidewalk holding the Georgian flag and discussing the country’s better future and Georgia’s development paths, then you are a gross lawbreaker and your place is in prison for up to 15 days. And if you dare to once again discuss the fate of the homeland on the sidewalk, then it becomes a criminal offense and you face up to one year in prison.
Sandro Megrelishvili was ready for this — as for what the servants of this regime plan to do in the future, I do not know,” Irakli Abesadze said.
