Kakha Kaladze, General Secretary of “Georgian Dream” and Mayor of Tbilisi, commented on the recent discussion about restoring public debates in political life, aligning with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze’s position.
Kaladze stressed that debates and polemics are always welcome, noting that in Georgia, political discourse has often been dominated by insults, defamation, and personal attacks, which he described as an unfortunate daily practice.
“Debates and polemics are always welcome. In all developed countries, this is a common practice. People can have differing opinions, and debates provide the public with the opportunity to understand which direction is correct. In our country, insults, defamation, and personal attacks have become routine, particularly from certain political parties and politicians, which is regrettable. We welcome this initiative and are ready to participate. We have repeatedly stated that discussion and debate are very important,” Kaladze said.
He added that public debates allow citizens to make informed choices by hearing the positions of all political groups aspiring to hold power.
Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze had earlier emphasized that restoring public debate is essential for a functioning democratic process and for countering any informal oligarchic influence that seeks to suppress differing opinions. Kaladze reiterated his support for these principles, highlighting the importance of re-establishing a culture of political, economic, and social debate in Georgia.
