Davit Matikashvili, Chairman of the Parliament’s Procedural Issues Committee, stated that a temporary investigative commission will be established to address the issue of food price regulation.
According to Matikashvili, the commission will interview specific individuals directly involved in the price formation process.
“The parliamentary session is beginning, and one of the most important agenda items is the creation of a temporary commission. This commission, working alongside the investigative actions conducted by the government commission and the State Security Service, will focus on determining optimal prices and understanding the realities of the pricing process. Of course, individuals directly involved in price formation will be questioned. Maximum effort will be made to relieve society of this heavy burden. This applies not only to food products but also to medications and fuel,” Matikashvili said.
For context, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated on December 24, 2025, that the large gap between European and Georgian food prices is largely due to high markups by distribution companies and retail chains, which account for an average of 86% from border to shelf. On the same day, the State Security Service announced the start of an investigation into food pricing. On January 5, 2026, a government commission was formed to address food prices. The first meeting of the government coordination commission took place on January 20, confirming that it will work on the pricing of food products, medications, and fuel. It is expected that the commission will complete its work by the end of April.
The government coordination commission members include: Mariam Kvrivishvili, Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development; Davit Songulashvili, Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture; Mikheil Sarjveladze, Minister of Internally Displaced Persons, Labor, Health, and Social Affairs; Lasha Khutsishvili, Minister of Finance; Mamuka Mdinaraidze, Head of the State Security Service; Levan Zhorzholiani, Head of the Government Administration; Irakli Lekvinadze, Chairman of the Competition and Consumer Protection Agency.
