“If the Ukrainian side sees that a new step should be taken in relations with Georgia, we fully welcome it. I would hope that this step is positive,” said Irakli Kadagishvili, Chairman of Parliament’s Committee on Local Self-Government, commenting on the appointment of Ukraine’s new ambassador to Georgia.

He noted that the previous expectation of making Georgia a “second front” is not just difficult to implement - it’s practically impossible.

“Of course, it was insulting to Georgia when [Zelenskyy] recalled the ambassador. All ambassadors left Kyiv; our embassy and our ambassador did not leave, nor was our flag taken down. That was our position. Naturally, our position was also that we could not start a war against Russia. So the vision that Ukraine or many thought Georgia should become a second front is today clearly not feasible. We see that some negotiation process is underway regarding the resolution of this war. The result will apparently not be immediate, but if the Ukrainian side sees that a new step should be taken in relations with Georgia, we fully welcome it.

If this is for the purpose of ‘rebooting’ relations, of course, we welcome it. I do not want to assume that the ambassador will use his appointment here as a platform for provocative statements. I would hope this step will be positive,” Kadagishvili added.

Note: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Mykhailo Brodovych as Ukraine’s ambassador to Georgia. Brodovych has been with Ukraine’s diplomatic service since 1996 and served as ambassador to Slovenia from 2015 to 2022.
