Nika Cherkezishvili: They created a sham commission and are exerting administrative pressure on business - prices cannot be lowered through pressure and press conferences alone; at the same time, they are taking steps that further entrench an oligopoly

“They created some kind of sham commission, and the only thing everyone can see is that administrative pressure is being exerted on business,” said Nika Cherkezishvili, a member of Lelo - Strong Georgia and a Tbilisi City Council deputy, while speaking about the temporary commission established to study price formation for food products, medicines, and fuel.

Speaking on PalitraNews program "Resume", Cherkezishvili stated that prices cannot be reduced through administrative pressure and press conferences.

“They bear absolute responsibility and blame for all of this. What were they doing for 13 years while these prices were rising? In reality, this is a forced step. They created some kind of sham commission, and the only thing everyone can see is administrative pressure on businesses. They summon manufacturers, distributors, as well as owners of supermarkets and small shops, and put pressure on them to achieve some temporary effect. This entire system is set up to look for someone to blame.

No special skills are needed to understand that prices cannot be reduced solely through administrative pressure and press conferences. This will not happen. At the same time, they are taking steps that in reality restrict competition and further entrench an oligopoly. At the initiative of Georgian Dream, a central purchasing body is being created, which will control around 2 billion lari from state finances. It will be part of the government structure under the supervision of Irakli Kobakhidze, and naturally, people acceptable to them - party operatives - will be employed in this structure, who will carry out any instruction,” Cherkezishvili said.
