Today it became known to the public that Estonia is moving its ambassador from Tbilisi to Yerevan. We do not know when Estonia will have a new ambassador in Tbilisi, - said Grigol Gegelia, Foreign Secretary of the Lelo-Strong Georgia party.
According to Gegelia, this decision indicates that Georgia is no longer perceived as the important partner it was in the past, which, according to him, is related to the country's anti-democratic foreign and domestic policies.
“Today it became known to the public that Estonia is moving its ambassador from Tbilisi to Yerevan. We do not know when Estonia will have a new ambassador in Tbilisi. This is a very good confirmation of the unfortunate dynamics taking place in the South Caucasus region, when Georgia is losing its traditional, political centrality. The country, which was once the political capital of this region, is today becoming a secondary state, which is out of touch with the main developments and dynamics that are now taking place in the South Caucasus region. Estonia is our very important partner and this gesture is an expression of the fact that, unfortunately, Georgia, due to its current foreign and domestic anti-democratic course, is not the important partner that it traditionally was,” said Gegelia.
He also spoke about the statement of the US State Department and noted that the reset of relations with Washington will not occur until the authorities take concrete steps. According to Gegelia, this is the third time the department has repeated the same message, which has been repeated many times in the past.
According to Gegelia, short and formal meetings with US representatives are not enough to normalize relations.
“Today we heard a statement from the US State Department, which confirms that the reset and normalization of relations with the US has not happened and will not happen until the regime takes concrete steps. The State Department has repeated the same message for the third time, which we have heard many times last year. This indicates that the regime must demonstrate positive will and demonstrate its readiness and desire to normalize relations with concrete actions.
As we can see, 3-second meetings with US leaders in basements and corridors are not and cannot be a sufficient prerequisite for normalizing relations with the US. Despite identical US statements, this regime has not taken a single positive step to restore the suspended Georgian-US strategic relations. Instead, the regime, which has expelled American capital from Georgia and wants to transfer the US deep-sea port project to China, has openly took the side of autocratic, anti-American forces. It has even more clearly distanced itself from the political West,” Gegelia said.
According to Gegelia, if the current political course continues, Georgia may be left without important international partners, which, according to him, will pose serious risks to the country’s future.
“At a time when this region is facing historic changes, when a new transit, economic, logistical and peacekeeping network is being created, when a new South Caucasian architecture is being born, the Arab broker Irakli Kobakhidze is talking about selling apartments. This is clear evidence of why the struggle of each of you is of central importance. Very soon, under this political course, Georgia will not have a single friend or partner, and the Georgian state will no longer exist with any prospects,” Gegelia said.
