Gia Volski - Bachiashvili is a fairly intelligent person, he realized that he had to give up the role of a martyr and admit the truth - whoever compensates even for the heavy damage that he caused to the state, a specific person, a group of people, the law will be more favorable towards him

Bachiashvili is a fairly intelligent person and he understood that the combination of evidence dictates that he must abandon the role of a martyr, abandon the idea that he is being held for political motives, and acknowledge the truth, which, of course, is supported by concrete facts and not by anyone's will, - the Vice Speaker of the Parliament, Gia Volski, said in response to the release of Giorgi Bachiashvili, the former head of the Co-Investment Fund.

According to him, Giorgi Bachiashvili has never been a political prisoner and could never become one in the future.

"The totality of evidence leaves no other way than confession. He confessed because he actually committed a crime and his criminal activity, of course, was reflected in specific actions. Of course, there is a reasonable suspicion that he financed the activities of the radical opposition, even that radicalism, extremism, in order to somehow avoid responsibility, which he would inevitably have to bear for the crimes that he actually committed. The evidence is real, where a real person actually participated, therefore, his confession, even compensation for damages, should become the basis... Not only in this case, in general, there is this policy in Georgia that any person who compensates even for severe damage that he caused to the state, a specific person, a group of persons, if he confesses, and in this case this happened, of course, the law will be favorable towards him," Volski said.

When asked whether other former high-ranking officials could also be released, Volski answered:

"Confession, compensation for damages, of course, can become a prerequisite for loyalty. As for Gharibashvili, Liluashvili - I have no information on this," Volski said.

For information, Giorgi Bachiashvili, left the penitentiary on February 18. The prosecutor's office says that Bachiashvili pleaded guilty to all criminal charges, paid damages, and signed a plea agreement.

The State Security Service arrested Giorgi Bachiashvili in May 2025. Bachiashvili was convicted of embezzling cryptocurrency from Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the Georgian Dream. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison in this case.

Bachiashvili was also convicted in another case involving illegal crossing of the state border. He was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison.

Giorgi Bachiashvili was also charged in the Mtkvari HPP case under Article 2201, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to failure to perform or improper performance of official duties by a person with special authority, which resulted in serious consequences. The charge provides for a sentence of 2 to 5 years in prison.
