We need to improve the quality of higher education, - this was stated by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during the presentation of labor market research, which was attended, among others, by university lecturers.
According to him, the labor market analysis conducted by the government revealed, for example, that the annual demand is for 678 lawyers, while 3,600 students enroll in law faculties.
Irakli Kobakhidze explained that this means a portion of enrolled students is doomed to never use their lawyer's diploma in their professional activities.
“There are specialties where a deficit has been identified. For example, if we take the law direction, the average annual enrollment over the past 5 years was 3,598 - almost 3,600 on average - enrolled annually in law faculties. The number of graduates was 2,047. This is also an alarming indicator, which points to the fact that we need to improve the quality of higher education. When the graduation rate compared to enrollment is about 40%, this in itself indicates that we have very serious challenges in the higher education sector. The law direction is no exception in this regard. Out of 3,600 enrolled students, only 2,047 complete their studies.
As for demand, our in-depth research revealed that on average, we need 678 lawyers to enter the labor market per year. The demand is for 678 lawyers annually, while 3,600 enroll in law and about 2,047 graduate. These figures already indicate how necessary and urgent it was to conduct the labor market analysis. In practice, we were sacrificing students so that they would go through a specific course, receive a higher education diploma, and never be able to find employment corresponding to their diploma. Naturally, preventing this is the state's responsibility. It was precisely for this purpose that the labor market analysis we conducted served. We see that in the case of lawyers, the imbalance between enrolled students and labor market demand is 2,920. That is, 2,920 enrolled students are doomed to never use a lawyer's diploma in their professional activities. Our goal is to prevent this, and that is exactly why the labor market analysis was conducted,” - stated Kobakhidze.
