According to one of the leaders of the "United National Movement," Lasha Parulava, the party demands the resignation of the President of the National Bank, Natia Turnava, and is launching monitoring of sanctions enforcement. Lasha Parulava made this statement in response to the statement by the President of the National Bank, Natia Turnava, regarding the sanctioning of "Imedi" and POSTV.
According to Lasha Parulava, "as it appears, Natia Turnava does not intend to enforce the sanctions imposed by the United Kingdom against 'Imedi' and 'POSTV' and states that the relevant agencies should first apply to Murusidze's court." Parulava assesses that such a position threatens Georgia's financial system, creates serious risks, and damages the stability of the banking sector.
"Natia Turnava is not receiving her 38,000 GEL salary to protect sanctioned persons. Her duty is to protect the interests of the people and ensure financial stability. If she cannot or does not want to resist political pressure, we call on her to resign.
Previously, the government protected Otar Partskhaladze, who came under international sanctions, and now it is protecting those media outlets that spread Russian hybrid war narratives," — stated Lasha Parulava.
Furthermore, according to Lasha Parulava's explanation, the "United National Movement" is launching the process of monitoring sanctions enforcement. According to him, they will publicly name every individual and company that provides financial or advertising support to the sanctioned television channels, and will provide this information to both local and international society.
For information: On February 24, the United Kingdom sanctioned the television companies "Imedi" and "POSTV." According to the British government, sanctions were imposed on "Imedi" and "POSTV" as organizations "involved in spreading Russian disinformation." The President of the National Bank of Georgia, Natia Turnava, responded to the issue and stated that commercial banks are obliged to act in accordance with the norms established by the Constitution and legislation of Georgia.
"Commercial banks operating in the country are legal entities created in accordance with the legislation of Georgia, and their activities are subject to the Constitution and national legislation of Georgia. In the event of a 'collision' between a normative act adopted in another jurisdiction and the Constitution and legislation of Georgia, operating commercial banks are obliged to act in accordance with the norms established by the Constitution and legislation."
