Prosecutor's Office: A mother forced her 11-year-old child to beg on the street, set daily collection amounts, and did not allow the child to return home until the money was collected - in both summer heat and winter cold and rain

The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has charged a mother who forced her child to beg on the street under threat of violence.

As stated in the information disseminated by the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, the accused set a daily amount of money her minor child had to collect and forced the child to beg every day, year-round.

The detained mother faces up to 17 years of imprisonment.

"The investigation conducted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs established that the accused recruited her 11-year-old minor child for the purpose of receiving benefits and subjected the child to labor exploitation starting from 2023. The accused forced the child, under threat of violence dangerous to health, to beg on the street in various districts of Tbilisi, and fully appropriated the collected money. The accused set a daily amount of money the minor had to collect. Until the amount was collected, the minor was not allowed to stop begging and return home - in both the summer heat and the winter cold and rainy weather.

The detained person has been charged under Article 143¹, Part 2, Subparagraph 'b' and Part 3, Subparagraphs 'b' and 'e' of the Criminal Code of Georgia (trafficking of a minor - recruitment of a minor for exploitation purposes, committed knowingly by the offender against a person materially or otherwise dependent on the offender: through coercion and threat of violence dangerous to health), which provides for imprisonment of up to 17 years," - the Prosecutor's Office information states.
