We do not want to restore relations [with the US] at any cost, otherwise there would have been a chance to reset the relationship by now - we have a great ability to wait, we are ready to calmly wait for the opportunity when there is a way to restore this relationship on fair grounds, - Levan Makhashvili, Chairman of the Parliament's Committee on European Integration, told journalists relating to the visit to the US by the Georgian parliamentary delegation.
According to him, the Georgian side wants to restore relations with the US on the basis of mutual respect and justice. As Makhashvili noted, the government will take its own steps, but will wait for counter-steps from the US.
“The conference to which my colleagues are invited begins tomorrow. On the 4th and 5th of March, there will be key meetings within the framework of this conference, but, of course, there will be meetings in Congress and with representatives of the executive branch. Our main expectation of this visit is to exchange updated information regarding our expectations, regarding the steps taken, which may not be known to the public, and to plan further steps, to the extent possible. In this direction, we view this visit as another good step forward and we hope that with this visit and other meetings, we will be able to restore relations. This is our expectation and desire. We have a great ability for waiting. Whether it will be a year, two, or whatever, we are ready, not emotionally, but step by step, to calmly wait for the opportunity when there will be an opportunity to restore these relations on fair grounds. We do not want to restore relations at any cost, otherwise there would have been, of course, a possibility of resetting the relationship. We want to restore the relationship on the basis of mutual respect and justice, and the dynamics that have been developing in this area recently give us hope that we will be able to do this in the near future, but once again, we have a great ability to wait, there is no hurry for this country, especially since we see what is happening in the world. We will wait calmly. We will take our steps, of course, what is in the hands and responsibility of the government, but we will wait for their steps,” Makhashvili said.
