Communications Commission: The United Kingdom's decision against two Georgian TV companies could pose a threat to media pluralism - from next week we will activate the norms of the Law "On Broadcasting" and the "Code of Conduct for Broadcasters"

The decision taken by the United Kingdom against two Georgian TV companies is aimed both at restricting fair competition among mass media and at hindering the professional activities of journalists, which could pose a threat to media pluralism and freedom of speech. Taking the above into account and based on the analysis of challenges in the media environment, we consider it necessary that from next week the Commission puts into practice the norms established by the Law "On Broadcasting" and the "Code of Conduct for Broadcasters," - this is stated in the announcement issued by the Communications Commission.

"InterpressNews" offers the statement unchanged:

"The Communications Commission, as the independent state authority regulating the broadcasting sector, is responsible for ensuring freedom of mass media, freedom of expression, media pluralism, and a stable media environment in Georgia.

The decision taken by the United Kingdom against two Georgian TV companies, one of which is the highest-rated broadcaster in Georgia, is directed both at restricting fair competition among mass media and at hindering the professional activities of journalists, which could pose a threat to media pluralism and freedom of speech in the country.

Taking the above into account and based on the analysis of challenges in the media environment, we consider it necessary that from next week the Commission puts into practice the norms established by the Law 'On Broadcasting' and the 'Code of Conduct for Broadcasters' in order to assess the objectivity of broadcasters on the basis of proper procedure and high legal standards.

It should be emphasized here that this decision should have been taken in any case for the establishment of correct and balanced media practice, but the current situation has made the issue and the necessity of its resolution even more relevant," - states the Communications Commission.

For information: In March of last year, "Georgian Dream" implemented amendments to the Law "On Broadcasting," as a result of which a number of new regulations, requirements, and standards were established regarding TV and radio broadcasters.

The law regulates issues related to the proper accuracy of facts and the right of reply, fairness and impartiality, inviolability of private life, the broadcaster's use of hidden methods to obtain and transmit information, coverage of armed confrontations, accidents, and other emergency situations, as well as the protection of minors.

The authority to respond to violations of broadcasting standards has been assigned to the state body - the National Communications Commission. In case of establishing a violation, the Commission has the authority to apply the following sanctions to the broadcaster: warning, fine, and in certain cases - suspension and revocation of the license.

The rules and regulations established by the law also apply to information published on the online and social pages of broadcasters.
