Anita Hipper: We demand the release of Mzia Amaglobeli and all those unjustly detained

Regarding the legislative package, we have stated very clearly that it restricts the country's democratic and civic space; it also imposes very broad control over political activity in the country, — this was stated by European Commission spokesperson Anita Hipper at today's briefing, when responding to a question from "Euroscope" about the Georgian Parliament's approval of a package of legislative changes that envisages tightening the law in relation to grants and political activity.

" Its vague provisions also create deep legal uncertainty and carry a significant risk of arbitrariness and selective enforcement, and this also relates to the question concerning the detention of Mzia Amaglobeli," — noted the European Commission spokesperson.

According to her, the European Union demands the release of Mzia Amaglobeli and "all those unjustly detained" in Georgia.

"We strongly condemn her imprisonment. Her conviction also demonstrates repression against independent voices. Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of persecution or excessive restrictions. Therefore, actions by the authorities aimed at targeting and silencing independent media also undermine the foundations of democracy and contradict Georgia's international obligations and the European aspirations of Georgia's population. Therefore, we demand her release and the release of all those unjustly detained," — noted the European Commission spokesperson, when responding to a question about the decision of Georgia's Supreme Court, which did not accept Mzia Amaglobeli's appeal for consideration.

She emphasized that the European Union supports the Georgian people and their European aspirations.
