The regime is simply trying to buy time. They have been protracting the banning of parties for so many months, despite the fact that the “treason commission” was created for this purpose - Kobakhidze’s statement truly reflects the fear that the regime has towards opposition groups, - Tina Bokuchava, the chairwoman of the National Movement, said in response to the statement of Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze regarding the banning of parties.
According to her, with this process, “the regime is trying to buy time”.
“In my opinion, the regime is simply trying to buy time. They have been protracting the banning of parties for so many months, despite the fact that the “treason commission” was created for this purpose. In reality, they realize that they are not in the political shape to take this next repressive step. They know that this will have very serious consequences, especially from international partners. This is a kind of red line because it already officially means the establishment of a one-party dictatorship in the country.
Today’s statement really reflects the fear that the regime has towards opposition unions. Today, the Opposition Alliance is the most effective opposition union that has been created in recent times.
There are two factors: one, the regime’s fear towards opposition unity and the other, they are trying to buy time. Technically, they will have to withdraw this lawsuit and file a new one if they plan to add new parties,” Bokuchava said.
For information, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, speaking about the Opposition Alliance, stated that “we will have to correct the lawsuit that we filed with the Constitutional Court. We will need to change the names of the parties based on the new configuration.”
