The Appellate Court upheld the decision of the Tbilisi City Court, which required former President Mikheil Saakashvili and former Head of the State Security Service Teimuraz Janashia to pay a total of 8,392,827 GEL into the state budget.
The defense side had appealed the Tbilisi City Court’s decision to the Appellate Court.
Specifically, the City Court ordered Mikheil Saakashvili and Teimuraz Janashia to pay a combined amount of 8,392,827 GEL into the state budget. In addition to this sum, Mikheil Saakashvili was ordered to pay an extra 631,540 GEL.
For information: Former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and former Head of the State Security Service Teimuraz Janashia were charged under Parts 2 and 3 of Article 182 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to the misappropriation of large amounts of money by a group through prior agreement and abuse of official position. In this case, Mikheil Saakashvili was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment, while Teimuraz Janashia was fined 300,000 GEL. Following this, the state initiated a civil lawsuit against them in court to recover the misappropriated funds, amounting to nearly 9 million GEL.
