Weimar Triangle: With the new regulations, the Georgian authorities are deliberately violating the obligations undertaken before the European Union, particularly within the framework of the Association Agreement

The Foreign Ministers of the Weimar Triangle countries – France, Germany, and Poland – issued a joint statement regarding the adoption of legislative changes on foreign funding and political activity.

The statement notes that the Foreign Ministers of the Weimar Triangle are concerned about the adoption, by the Georgian Parliament on March 4, of new legislation on foreign funding and political activity, which is “evidence of the Georgian authorities’ increasingly repressive approach toward civil society.”

“We fully support the statement of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of March 6, 2026. The new changes extend state control over political and civic activities in Georgia to an unprecedented level and undermine freedom of association and expression. They weaken the rule of law and place additional pressure on independent civil society, particularly on independent media, human rights defenders, experts, and service providers,” the statement reads.

According to the statement, “with these new regulations, the Georgian authorities are deliberately violating Georgia’s obligations undertaken before the European Union, particularly within the framework of the Association Agreement with the EU.”

“We remind that the course implemented by the Georgian government since 2024 has effectively brought its EU membership process to a halt, as explained in the European Council conclusions of 2024 and confirmed by the European Commission in the 2025 Enlargement Report.

We once again reaffirm our unwavering support for the Georgian people and civil society organizations, who work persistently for Georgia’s democratic and European future. We also reaffirm our support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders,” the statement reads.
