Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine: The personality of Ilia II held exceptional significance not only for Georgia but for the entire Orthodox world

The Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine, Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine, expressed his condolences over the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, and extended sympathy to the Orthodox Church and the people of Georgia.

“With sorrow and sympathy, I received the news of the passing of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude, Ilia II, the leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church and spiritual guide, who dedicated his life to serving God, the Church, and the Georgian people,” the condolence letter reads.

Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine noted that throughout decades of service, Ilia II was the spiritual leader for countless believers, striving to strengthen faith, preserve Christian traditions, and renew society spiritually after years of state atheism.

“It is also memorable for us that he expressed support for Ukraine, which is enduring a full-scale invasion by Russia. The personality of Patriarch Ilia II was of exceptional significance not only for Georgia but for the entire Orthodox world. His service inspired many, helped people overcome trials, and maintain hope even in the most difficult times, especially during wars provoked by Russian aggressors. I sincerely offer condolences to the bishops, clergy, and all believers of the Georgian Orthodox Church who have lost their leader, as well as to the Georgian people, for whom he was not only a patriarch but a true spiritual father,” wrote Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine.
