I am sure that several ambassadors would be shocked to see that all attempts to undermine the Georgian Church had been in vain, - the Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, said in a conversation with journalists.

According to him, for years, attempts to discredit the Church, the Patriarch and specific individuals have been financed from abroad.

As Papuashvili noted, the country has been observing the organized campaign against the Georgian Orthodox Church for 22 years.

“For the past 22 years, we have been observing an organized campaign against the Georgian Orthodox Church. This has its own goal, to discredit the organization that has the greatest authority in Georgia. Discredit in order to then impose their own ideology on the society. This is almost a religious war in order to replace the spiritual pillar in Georgia that has carried us through the centuries with their own ideology.

Some European leaders and bureaucracy are trying to turn the European Union into a pseudo-religion. We see many pseudo-religious features in them when they talk about values and worth, but as a rule they do not specify the content.

The Patriarch spoke about this in 2004 - about the methods that were started then. The Patriarch was talking about exactly this: that there was an attempt to make clichés - “anti-Western”, “Pro-Russian” and so on - working with these clichés in order to discredit.

We saw that those people who discredited the Church were directly financed from abroad. The last time those people who were engaged in discrediting the Church received funding from France. You also remember the issue of Giorgi Kandelaki regarding the icon in the Trinity Cathedral - after all this, they received funding from France. They had EU funding and other foreign funding for the so-called Tolerance Center... They were financed from abroad and these people were directly engaged in discrediting not only the Church, but also the Patriarch and specific people.

All this has been going on for years with external funding. But despite the millions that were poured against the Georgian people in order to discredit their spiritual pillar, they were thrown into the water. In one day they saw that Georgian society showed its position on everything. I am sure that several ambassadors would be shocked to see that all efforts to undermine the Georgian Church had been in vain. We saw more than a million and a half people in those days in the Trinity Church and we saw where the nation is and where the protestants are, who they want to portray as a Georgian nation," Papuashvili said.
