Levan Machavariani: We have completely lost interest in what the British say, as we see they are fully under informal oligarchic rule - the influence of the "deep state"

Levan Machavariani, an MP from Georgian Dream, commented on the UK Parliament’s call to impose new sanctions on officials of Georgian Dream, stating that it no longer matters to them what the British side declares.

According to him, following allegations aired by the BBC regarding the use of “Camite” and the sanctioning of TV channels Imedi and Postv, the position of the British authorities is no longer of interest to the Georgian government.

"We have completely lost interest in what the British say, because we see that they are entirely under informal oligarchic governance - the same ‘deep state’ influences. Incidentally, Liz Truss, who was recently the UK Prime Minister, has spoken extensively about this.

What the UK has done is unacceptable. On one hand, when their public broadcaster accused our government of such an absurd story that even a small child would not believe - that we allegedly poisoned the population with chemical weapons from World War I, when in fact no one has been poisoned.

On the other hand, we remember the UK’s recent attack on free speech in our country, when they sanctioned Imedi and Postv with equally absurd arguments - that these TV channels somehow undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and influence developments on the front line. This is another piece of nonsense that even a child would not believe, just like the ‘Camite’ circus.

Accordingly, based on these actions, we have absolutely no interest in what any specific MP or the UK Parliament says, because unfortunately they have deviated from the values on which the United Kingdom once stood and was distinguished for its democratic tradition. I will also note that just two years ago, more than 24,000 citizens were arrested in the UK for conservative Facebook posts. This alone demonstrates the severe state of democracy in the UK,” Machavariani said.

For context, the UK Parliament has published a report that includes references to Georgia. In particular, it calls on the government to impose new sanctions on officials of Georgian Dream, as well as on Georgian kleptocrats and media organizations that spread disinformation.
