The government plans to purchase 50 new locomotives and 1,500 carriages. Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze made the relevant announcement at thegovernment meeting.
"Georgian Railways has developed an action plan for development for 2026-2028. According to this plan, we will purchase 50 new locomotives, as well as 1,500 new wagons, as well as introduce modern railway systems, as a result of which operational processes will improve and the capacity of Georgian Railways will double. We will also purchase 10 new passenger trains. As a result, all mainline flights will be carried out by new trains. Passenger transportation will become much more comfortable and faster, both for our citizens and for guests of our country. The annual passenger transportation rate will increase from 2 million to 5 million.
In addition, the Tbilisi - Kutaisi direction will be added to the railway. The rehabilitation of the Tbilisi - Batumi railway will be completed in August, as a result of which the travel time will be reduced from 5.5 hours to 4 hours. We will reduce the travel time from Tbilisi to Batumi by an hour and a half.
Also, the rehabilitation of the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe railway will be completed in August, as a result of which the aforementioned route, which was canceled since 2009, will be restored. The travel time will be reduced from 6 hours to 3 hours compared to the old time. That is, the travel time on the Tbilisi-Akhaltsikhe direction will be halved,” Kobakhidze said.
