Communications Commission warns Imedi TV, Postv, TV Company Pirveli, and Formula in writing for violating Georgian Law on Broadcasting

The Communications Commission has issued written warnings to Imedi TV, Postv, TV Company Pirveli, and Formula for violating the Georgian Law on Broadcasting. According to the Communications Commission, as a result of their monitoring, which covered the period of February-March of this year, it was revealed that the news programs broadcast on the mentioned channels contained facts of the spread of personal opinions by the presenters/reporters, violation of the requirements of impartiality and accuracy of facts, and violation of the requirements established by law.

In the case of Imedi TV, 4 violations were identified - the presenters of the program covered the news based on their personal opinions and attitudes.

In the case of Postv, 7 violations were identified, which included violations of the prohibition of the expression of personal opinions by news presenters and the requirement to transmit information based on facts with due accuracy.

18 violations were identified for TV Pirveli, where cases of news presenters/reporters reporting news based on personal opinions/attitudes, presenting only one side’s position (unilateral coverage), and violating the requirement of due accuracy were identified.

In the case of Formula, 20 violations were identified, which were mainly related to the violation of the principle of impartiality, namely, reporting news based on personal opinions/attitudes. In addition, a violation of the requirement to maintain balance was also observed, as the position of only one side was presented.

The Law of Georgia on Broadcasting prohibits a broadcaster from covering news and certain socio-political programs based on personal attitudes or opinions. Restricting the expression of a broadcaster’s personal attitudes or opinions in a news program, as well as complying with the requirements for maintaining balance and reporting facts with due accuracy serves to protect the editorial independence of the broadcaster and the rights of viewers, so that they have the opportunity to receive objective information.

It should be noted that the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting entered into force on April 1, 2025. Until June 1, 2025, in case of violations against broadcasters, the Commission considered the issue, but did not apply the sanctions provided for by law.

Given that no sanctions have been applied to Imedi TV, Postv, TV Company Pirveli, and Formula for violations of a similar nature in the past year, the Communications Commission has only warned the broadcasters in writing," reads the information released by the Communications Commission.
