“We reviewed all the key issues that currently stand as challenges to our democracy — I can say that there will be no normalization under a ‘Georgian Dream’ façade,” said Grigol Gegelia, one of the leaders of Strong Georgia – Lelo, after a meeting with the Weimar Triangle countries’ delegation.
According to him, under the current course — “when Georgian Dream engages in anti-European rhetoric, has political prisoners, does not hold elections, and has captured the state — there will be no reset with the European Union.”
“The meeting took place with the Europe directors of the foreign ministries of the Weimar states, meaning those people who shape the policy direction and content regarding our region and our state. The ambassadors of the Weimar states in Georgia also attended the meeting.
We reviewed all the key issues that currently stand as challenges to our democracy. I can say that there will be no normalization under a ‘Georgian Dream’ façade. If the Georgian Dream regime wants any kind of normalization with the European Union and the civilized world, they will have to take concrete steps: release political prisoners; call new elections; and stop their self-destructive politics.
Under this course, when Georgian Dream engages in anti-European rhetoric, has political prisoners, does not hold elections, and has captured the state, there will be no reset with the European Union,” Gegelia said.
According to him, the “Georgian Dream” illusion that any kind of stabilization can occur without taking any steps is doomed to failure.
“The meeting was held in a closed format, so I cannot speak about the details.
I can tell you that the ‘Georgian Dream’ model of stabilization is doomed to failure. If no real and concrete steps are taken by them, there will be no stabilization at all. Therefore, the illusion that some kind of stabilization can happen without any action is doomed to fail.
I want to tell ‘Georgian Dream’ to look closely at the example of Hungary, look at what happened to their ideological predecessors, and they will see their own very near future,” Gegelia stated.
He also noted that the meeting addressed “all draconian Russian laws.”
“Laws were discussed as well, all draconian Russian laws, and the general situation in the country. This situation is anti-national, anti-Georgian, and anti-European. It serves only the interests of Georgian Dream — it does not serve the interests of any Georgian citizen. On the contrary, it harms the social, economic, and European integration future of all Georgians,” he said.
For the record, members of the Weimar Triangle delegation currently visiting Georgia include: Niklas Wagner, Director of the Political Department for Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Central Asia at the German Federal Foreign Office; Brice Roquefeuil, Director of the Continental Europe Department at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs; and Michał Giergion, Deputy Director of the Eastern Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Department at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The delegation also met with the Head of the Government Administration, Levan Zhorzholiani. Meetings were also held with opposition parties and representatives of the NGO sector.
