“Due to the high public interest, Georgian Technical University is issuing this statement.
The university responds to the detention by officers of the Tbilisi Police Department’s Main Division for Juvenile Affairs under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, of an individual born in 1960 (Z.A.), on charges of raping minors and committing other forms of sexual violence against them.
Georgian Technical University strongly condemns any act of violence, especially when it concerns potential violations of minors’ rights, and emphasizes that such horrific acts fundamentally contradict the principles of humanity, compassion, and basic human relations.
The university fully upholds the principle of the presumption of innocence and expresses its readiness to cooperate with relevant law enforcement authorities to ensure a comprehensive, objective, and transparent investigation until an impartial court verdict is delivered.
The university confirms that Z.A., who was employed at the Faculty of Informatics and Management Systems, had his authority suspended in accordance with internal regulations, in parallel with measures taken by relevant agencies, immediately after legal proceedings began.
At the same time, the university stresses that any form of violence, discrimination, or unethical behavior is категорically unacceptable within the academic space and contradicts both the university’s code of ethics and universally recognized academic and scientific standards. However, it also notes that it is impossible to have full information about the private lives of every member of the university community (professors, researchers, administrative staff, students).
The university reiterates that protecting human rights, safety, and the presumption of innocence remains its highest priority. Additional information will be provided to the public if necessary, in full compliance with applicable legislation and ethical standards,” the statement reads.
