Guram Macharashvili: The United National Movement and its satellite parties must be declared unconstitutional as soon as possible - until they are banned, the political spectrum will not recover, and there will always be political turmoil

“The United National Movement and its satellite parties must be declared unconstitutional as soon as possible — until these parties are banned, the political spectrum will not recover, and the country will always face this kind of political instability,” said Guram Macharashvili, a member of “People’s Power,” while speaking about the new constitutional lawsuit regarding the banning of opposition parties.

According to him, parties that think in an anti-state manner should be included in the list of banned parties.

“‘Blessed are the believers’ — these are the people who have been defeated ten times in elections in Georgia, have been defeated several times in violent protests, and several times in revolutionary attempts, because the overwhelming majority of Georgian society supports family values, preserving sovereignty, the Church and religious life, and not LGBT propaganda. This is the most important point.

How many cycles they go through is up to them. As for banning and adding them to the lawsuit — of course, even if the ‘United National Movement’ splits, changes form, or changes its name, society knows very well all those who were founders, leaders, supporters, and ideologists. Nothing can change that.

Of course, such parties should not exist in Georgia. It is not the name ‘United National Movement’ that bothers us or that we want to ban — the issue is those individuals who act and think openly in an anti-constitutional manner. That is exactly why the ‘Federalists’ were added to the lawsuit as well.

We also held consultations, including with ‘Georgian Dream,’ and it was decided at this stage to proceed this way. These people were also founders and ideologists of the ‘National Movement.’ They now pretend to oppose Saakashvili, but ultimately, have the leaders of the ‘Federalists’ condemned Michael Roth’s statement? — No. Have they condemned the October 4 attempt to overthrow the government? — No.

Therefore, we have clearly stated in the lawsuit that parties acting in an anti-state manner must be included in the list of banned parties. Of course, within the framework of the law and deadlines, the United National Movement and its satellite parties must be declared unconstitutional as soon as possible. This is the demand of Georgian society, and we are firm on this. Until the United National Movement and its branches are banned in Georgia, the political spectrum will not recover, and the country will continue to experience this kind of political instability,” Macharashvili said.

For context, “Georgian Dream” plans to submit a new constitutional lawsuit to the Constitutional Court regarding the banning of political parties, while withdrawing its previous claim. Under the new lawsuit, the number of parties targeted for banning increases, with the “Federalists” party added to the list.
