Parents of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy appeal to Prosecutor's Office

Parents of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are appealing to the Prosecutor's Office. Specifically, the parents speak in their statement about "illegal instructions" from the police and note that it includes elements of crime, such as obstruction of the exercise of the right to assembly and demonstration, discrimination, and abuse of official authority.

Based on the above, the parents of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are asking the Prosecutor's Office to respond to the listed actions of the police and ensure the protection of their rights.

“Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a genetic disease that causes muscle wasting, wheelchair-bound and premature death. There are about 100 children with Duchenne in Georgia. Modern medicines and multifaceted research that can extend the lives of children are not available in Georgia and the state does not fund them. Parents and supporters of children with dystrophy hold rallies in front of the State Chancellery every day to save the lives of our children and demand medicine and funding for treatment from the state.

Our rallies are completely peaceful and take place in an open public square, which is 70-100 meters away from buildings and the road. Nevertheless, the police, constantly mobilized on the spot, forbid us to bring tents, poufs and pillows.

The constant presence of parents without these items on wooden benches, in the open air for 24 hours poses a threat to our health. On April 27, one of the parents actually became ill due to being in these conditions and an ambulance had to be called.

In addition, at the April 20 rally, children with Duchenne were not allowed to enter the office lobby to demand answers to our demands themselves.

The police instructions are completely illegal. There is no basis for prohibiting the bringing of these items into a public square.

These actions by the police contain signs of various crimes such as obstruction of the exercise of the right to assembly and demonstration (Article 161 of the Criminal Code), discrimination (Article 142 of the Criminal Code), abuse of official authority (Article 143 of the Criminal Code). Article 333).

Based on all of the above, we ask you to respond to the above actions of the police and ensure the protection of our rights,” reads the statement released by the parents of children with Duchenne says.
