Maka Bochorishvili: U.S. State Department representatives to visit Georgia in May

“For the first time, it was voiced from the American side that Georgia has returned to the agenda of the United States administration. Since then, we have already seen concrete steps. A number of consultations have taken place, including a phone call with the Prime Minister, as well as visits both in Washington and in Tbilisi by representatives of the State Department,” said Georgia’s Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Bochorishvili, while speaking on the Georgian Public Broadcaster’s program “Day’s Topic.”

Speaking about the ongoing process, Bochorishvili noted that this is an initial stage of consultations, and the outcome will largely depend on future developments.

“Of course, this can be considered the first stage of consultations and the first meetings of this format with the State Department under the Trump administration. Much will depend on how events unfold and what results these consultations bring. At this stage, we can say that the communication and meetings held so far with the U.S. side can be assessed positively and productively, as evidenced by the planned visits we expect in May,” Bochorishvili said.

The minister also highlighted visits that took place in April.

“In April, a representative of the State Department visited Georgia. We held consultations, and I personally met with them, as did many representatives of the Georgian government. The result of this visit was a phone conversation between the Prime Minister of Georgia and the U.S. Secretary of State. This reflects the progress we have in relations with the United States. Both we and the Secretary of State have noted that the legacy the Trump administration inherited in relations with Georgia was not easy, and it was not simple to take the steps needed to reach this point and begin dialogue. We are pleased that this has happened and that we have been able to return to the table and continue discussions on Georgia–U.S. relations, which is very important. The process we have gone through since February has been highly significant,” she said.

According to Bochorishvili, a visit by U.S. State Department representatives is planned for May, including meetings with various government officials.

“In May, representatives of the U.S. State Department will visit Georgia. Meetings will be scheduled not only with me but also with various representatives of the Georgian government,” she stated.

The minister added that statements and messages from the U.S. side indicate a real willingness to reset relations and begin this process.

“It is already a signal when, at the highest level in the United States, there is talk about the desire to reset relations. This message was also conveyed in conversations with me - that the legacy was difficult and that work was needed to improve relations and change this situation. We are now seeing the results of this message,” Bochorishvili said.

She also noted that there is potential to renew strategic cooperation, though the success of the process will largely depend on political will from the U.S. side.

“The possibility of restarting strategic cooperation certainly exists. We must manage this process properly, and much depends on the willingness of the United States to reset relations with Georgia. Based on the calls, meetings, and communication so far, we can say that this willingness exists, and we hope to see a more positive dynamic in our relations,” Bochorishvili concluded.
