Zaza Bibilashvili: Not a single word coming out of the mouth of ‘Georgian Dream’ can be trusted, so we should refrain from speculating about what might happen in May - let them show it - It is unrealistic to expect any thaw in relations with the United States

Bibilashvili, head of the Chavchavadze Center, said this in an interview on the PalitraNews program “Dghis Newsroom,” adding that even if EU leaders were to meet tomorrow in Brussels and decide to forget everything that has happened and forgive ‘Georgian Dream,’ the next day Kobakhidze and Papuashvili would do something that would nullify that decision, because, in his view, this serves Russia’s national interests.

“Even if tomorrow the heads of EU member states were to meet in Brussels and say: let’s forget everything that has happened and forgive ‘Dream,’ the next day Kobakhidze and Papuashvili would do something that would cancel out that EU decision, because this is Russia’s national interest. The only kind of ‘rapprochement’ they are interested in with the EU and the US is a Russian-style one, which means: ‘there will be no more democracy here, we will stay in power, we will call whatever law we want a law, we will arrest whoever we want, accept this reality and let’s talk like this.’ It is hard to imagine that the US and the EU would agree to this,” Bibilashvili said.

According to him, “Georgian Dream” will do everything to prevent rapprochement with the United States and the European Union.

“What can one say about Maka Bochorishvili… even if you sell your soul to the devil, everything becomes permissible, but let’s look at a specific quote — what Kobakhidze said on November 28, 2024, who stopped what, until when, and why. ‘Georgian Dream’ will do everything to prevent rapprochement. The only ‘rapprochement’ they are interested in with the EU and the US is a Russian-style one,” he said.

Bibilashvili also commented on relations with the Trump administration and reports that a US State Department deputy assistant secretary, Sonata Coulter, may visit Georgia in May. He said that in the broader picture, Georgia’s foreign policy under “Georgian Dream” has been a failure, as the country has moved from high-level visits by US presidents, vice presidents, and top officials to the possibility of a lower-level diplomatic visit.

“We used to live in a reality where the President of the United States, the Vice President, the Secretary of State, leading senators and congressmen would visit Georgia every year, and now, if we are lucky (the embassy has not confirmed it yet), a deputy assistant secretary might come. So what ‘Georgian Dream’ is trying to sell as success is something that has not even happened yet. Their foreign policy is objectively a failure for this country,” he said.

He added that US contacts with “Georgian Dream” are often pragmatic and related to regional issues, similar to contacts with other non-aligned actors in specific contexts.

Regarding a reported phone call involving Marco Rubio, Bibilashvili said the information released by the State Department was very limited and indicated there was nothing that “Georgian Dream” could present as a success.

On reported meetings between US officials and both government and opposition representatives, he said this is standard diplomatic protocol, especially when there are concerns that the ruling power may not reflect the will of the people.

Bibilashvili concluded: “Not a single word coming out of ‘Georgian Dream’ should be believed. This is a government that relies solely on propaganda and PR. We should refrain from speculation — let them show it.”
