Peter Fischer – I am a little worried about Mr. Papuashvili, he either doesn’t really understand what Europe is or pretends not to understand, neither of which is good – I don’t think the EU or any member state needs to be lectured on what Europe is

“I am a little worried about Mr. Papuashvili, he either doesn’t really understand what Europe is or pretends not to understand, neither of which is good – I don’t think the EU or any member state needs to be lectured on what Europe is,” German Ambassador Peter Fischer told InterpressNews in response to a lengthy letter sent to the EU ambassador by the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament.

According to Fischer, the accusations that the EU is harming relations with Georgia are false and “Georgian citizens know this very well.”

"The accusations are clearly false, I think if you ask any person here [at Europe Day], they will tell you that they see Europe as a friend, as a friendly and good place, as a source of hope, as a partner that has been partnering with Georgia since it gained independence. We do not accept this criticism, we reject this criticism and I do not think that the European Union or any member state needs to give a lecture on what Europe is. I always recommend to the Georgian people to read the EU treaties, everything is written there about what our values are, what our constitution is. We are based on unity and diversity, we are a peaceful, free and prosperous place and Georgians are very welcome to be with us, our friends and partners," said Peter Fischer.
