The fact that some police officers were finally arrested for violence during the demonstrations is, I think, a step in the right direction, EU Ambassador to Georgia Pawel Herczynski told reporters at an event marking Europe Day.
“There are conclusions of the Council of the European Union and the European Council. These are documents that the 27 member states unanimously agreed on, and they clearly state what we expect from the candidate countries, including Georgia. Last year, a report was published, which, I regret to say, but is devastating. We are now working on a new enlargement report, which will be published in November. You can see these documents, which lists the steps we expect Georgia to take to get back on the path of European integration,” Pawel Herczynski said.
When asked whether there were any deadlines set for the EU's expectations, the ambassador replied that "everything is in Georgia's hands."
“The decision has already been made on our part. As I have already said and I repeat, it was a miracle that all twenty-seven leaders of the European Union unanimously supported the granting of candidate status to Georgia at the highest level. From our side, the question of Georgia’s eligibility for EU membership is closed. We are waiting for Georgia. Unfortunately, time is running out and we are wasting a lot of time. It takes two to tango. There are already some positive steps. The fact that at last several police officers were arrested for the violence they committed during the demonstrations, I think this is a step in the right direction. Impunity is unacceptable. We condemn violence from all sides. There are other steps as well. I sincerely hope that the Georgian authorities will return to the path of EU integration. We, as the EU and the EU delegation, are always ready to help, but we need sincere readiness. I will say once again that EU integration is based on clear rules. EU member states are a family. We represent a system based on freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights. All countries aspiring to join must adhere to the same values and principles," the ambassador noted.
