Kakha Kaladze responded to reports about the German city of Saarbrücken’s plan to cut official ties with Tbilisi, saying that it is their right to act as they wish

“It's their right; they can act however they want,” Kaladze told journalists when asked about reports published by Saarbruecken Zeitung suggesting that after 51 years of partnership, the German city may suspend all official relations with Georgia’s capital.

According to Kaladze, there has been no meaningful communication with the city since he became mayor in 2017.

“They have that right. They can do as they wish. Since 2017, when I have been mayor, there has been no communication. A delegation once came for ‘Tbilisoba,’” he said.

For context, Saarbruecken Zeitung reported that after 51 years of twinning relations, the German city of Saarbrücken is planning to suspend all official ties with Tbilisi. The proposal, submitted by the office of Mayor Uwe Conradt, is expected to be discussed at a city council meeting. The recommendation suggests pausing all contacts with the Georgian capital until further notice, citing political developments in Georgia as the reason for the move.
