Pre-trial detention ordered and psychiatric examination appointed for person accused of hooliganism near Patriarchate residence

Pre-trial detention has been ordered for Rostom Mazmishvili, accused of hooliganism near the Patriarchate residence and damage to property.

The above-mentioned decision was made by Tbilisi City Court Judge Eka Barbakadze.

The prosecutor's office requested the use of the most severe preventive measure of pre-trial detention against the detainee.

As the prosecutor of the case, Irakli Kvavadze, explained, the crime, due to its specificity and content, is of particular danger and there is a risk that the defendant may continue his criminal actions.

According to the prosecutor, the defendant has a previous conviction and was under a suspended sentence at the time of the crime.

According to Kvavadze, a psychiatric examination has been ordered for the accused, as he may have certain psychiatric problems.

According to the detainee's lawyer, Ilia Natsvlishvili, the accusation is presented incorrectly and the prosecution's position that he used a weapon to commit the act is incorrect, because according to the lawyer, a plastic bottle cannot be considered a weapon.

The lawyer requested the release of his client on bail of 2,000 GEL.

The defendant made a short speech.

For information, according to the prosecutor's office, on May 20, 2026, Rostom Mazmishvili, citing religious intolerance, drove a car into the territory of the Patriarchate's residence, where he damaged the so-called "barrier", the entrance door and a car parked in the yard. Then he threatened the people in the yard. Rostom Mazmishvili was charged under Article 187, Part 1 (damaging another person's property) and Article 239, Part 3 (hooliganism committed using another object as a weapon) of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for up to 7 years of imprisonment as a form and measure of punishment.
