Nika Gvaramia stated that a high-ranking United States delegation is currently visiting Georgia and is holding meetings with both the opposition and what he referred to as the “self-proclaimed authorities,” adding that the situation in the country is under close international and domestic scrutiny.
Speaking at a briefing held on behalf of the “Opposition Alliance,” where details of the planned May 26 rally were discussed, Gvaramia said the opposition intends to continue what he described as a consistent and principled protest aimed at “the collapse of the regime,” which he said has been ongoing for more than 500 days.
“I call on the ‘authorities’ to refrain from any incidents. Among those present here is a high-ranking United States delegation, with which the opposition is holding meetings, and the self-proclaimed authorities as well. The processes are under a very large magnifying glass both inside Georgia and abroad. Everyone should refrain from illegal actions, and every unlawful act will have consequences. Everyone must avoid any form of escalation. Our protest is peaceful and based on constitutional rights,” Gvaramia said.
He also reiterated that the opposition does not plan to change its previously announced plans. According to him, tomorrow at 7:00 PM they will gather at the first building of the State University and then march toward Rustaveli Avenue.
Gvaramia added that before the march, they will attempt to bring in equipment and set up a stage in order to hold a full-scale rally, which he said is their constitutional right.
