“It is good that the violence incident in Gori was made public and that the state acted without any hesitation,” Tbilisi Mayor and Secretary General of Georgian Dream, Kakha Kaladze, told journalists while commenting on the physical assault carried out by law enforcement officers against two individuals in the so-called “Kombinati” settlement in Gori, as well as the arrest of six officers.
According to Kaladze, what happened was very disturbing and difficult to watch.
“If there is anyone who should not be actively speaking about this issue, it is precisely the United National Movement, because we all remember what processes were taking place during their time in power, what kind of problems the Georgian people faced, and, in general, what situation the entire country was in.
As for this specific incident, of course, everything the public saw was very bad and very difficult to watch. However, another important issue is that there was an immediate response from the state, once again confirming that everyone is equal before the law,” Kakha Kaladze stated.
At the same time, he noted that it is positive that the incident became public.
“It is good that this fact was made public and that it was followed by an appropriate response from the relevant agencies, which demonstrates that the state made a decision without any hesitation and acted immediately,” the Tbilisi mayor said.
For reference, in Gori, in the so-called “Kombinati” settlement, law enforcement officers physically assaulted two individuals — Papuna Lotsulashvili and his friend. Six law enforcement officers have been arrested in connection with the incident. They have been charged under Article 333, Part 3, Subparagraph “b” of the Criminal Code, which concerns abuse of official authority committed with violence. The offense carries a prison sentence of 5 to 8 years.
At the same time, an investigation has also been launched against Papuna Lotsulashvili under Article 353 of the Criminal Code, which concerns violence against a police officer.
