“On May 25-28, the U.S. delegation met in Tbilisi with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Vice Prime Ministers Botchorishvili and Mdinaradze, and other government officials to discuss the future path forward for improving bilateral relations. The delegation shared with the Georgian government the Trump administration’s readiness to engage in a constructive, forward-looking relationship with the country and its interest in ushering in a new era in bilateral relations between sovereign partners based on mutual respect, shared interests, and candid dialogue. The sides discussed areas of potential convergence between the United States and Georgia, including: a shared commitment to national sovereignty, a fair economic environment, resilience to adverse external influences, and the fundamental values that define both nations. This convergence provides a solid foundation for a deeper partnership.
The U.S. delegation emphasized our interest in expanding commercial cooperation with Georgia, including: providing greater access to American goods and investment; and deepening cooperation in the areas of security and energy. A sustainable strategic partnership will require continued progress by ensuring the conditions that make Georgia a reliable partner, including a favorable business environment for American businesses and a stable domestic political climate that is conducive to opposition engagement. The delegation discussed concrete steps that the Georgian government can take to help us achieve this goal.
The United States looks forward to working with the Georgian government on a partnership that will bring tangible benefits to both countries and fully realize the potential of our bilateral relationship,” reads the statement.
As for the delegation’s comments after meeting with leaders of Georgia’s opposition parties, they said political stability and meaningful opposition representation are among the factors that make Georgia a reliable partner for U.S. investment, security cooperation, and long-term strategic partnerships.
“The U.S. delegation held in-depth discussions with representatives of Georgia’s major opposition parties, including the United National Movement, the Coalition for Change, Strong Georgia – Lelo, and the Gakharia for Georgia party. The delegation heard concerns about the treatment of opposition parties since October 2024, including the ongoing case in the Constitutional Court and the current political environment.
The delegation shared with them the United States’ position on the participation of the opposition in Georgia’s democratic institutions. A functioning democracy requires a political opposition that engages with state institutions to represent the interests of the citizens who voted for it. Political stability and effective opposition representation are among the factors that make Georgia a reliable partner for American investment, security cooperation, and long-term strategic partnerships.
The United States is committed to constructive engagement with all serious political actors interested in the stability, sovereignty, and prosperity of their country,” reads the statement.
